In-depth: How do successful e-commerce and dropshipping companies work?
E-commerce is buying or selling products or services over the internet. For many, this is largely through third-party marketplaces and platforms such as Amazon, eBay or Facebook, or through directing leads to their own sites supported either by plugins like WooCommerce or hosted on platforms like Shopify.
The fields an e-commerce business could cover are almost completely unlimited and likewise for the targeting; some will target specific niches and attempt to break through in that niche in multiple markets, while others may target multiple niches in specific markets – or, just as commonly, a combination of the both.
Original e-commerce is what likely comes to mind first when you think about online retailing: it’s a traditional model of either producing your own products which you then sell or, in a wholesale fulfillment model, purchasing a large inventory of products which you then store, market and fulfil orders from in-house.
Dropshipping, on the other hand, means you do not keep the inventory in stock yourself. Instead, you advertise the products for sale, accept the orders from the customers and then pass those orders on to the party who does hold the inventory – perhaps another retailer, a manufacturer or a fulfilment center. This requires careful organization, but it is a popular way to get started in e-commerce due to its low overhead costs.
The online retail sector has boomed throughout the coronavirus pandemic, but while this has a been an enormous opportunity for many, it does mean that the marketplace is becoming ever-more crowded.
For many sellers, then, the key to making money from e-commerce is to spread yourself across multiple fronts by opening multiple online storefronts.
This gives you more opportunities to place your products in front of your customers, as well as to target different sectors with different branding. It also means you can expand your full product range without compromising your brand – if you add products from an unrelated sector, you don’t need to try to fit them all into one brand.
While an online-only retail model eliminates some of the risks of traditional brick-and-mortar stores, particularly in start-up costs, it does have some significant dangers of its own that it’s important to protect against. If you’re running multiple e-commerce accounts, you run the risk of platforms like eBay, Facebook and Amazon banning your accounts. If they are detected as originating from the same user, they will automatically be flagged as suspicious and suspended. That detection can come from something a simple as a mismatch of geographical location or an unrealistic account history.
So how do you stop account bans? The best way is to protect against them with a tool like Multilogin that provides you with hundreds of completely segregated virtual browser profiles. Instead of blocking platforms from reading your ‘fingerprint’ – an instant sign of suspicious behavior – platforms read your profiles as native, real fingerprints as if they were separate devices.
